Laboratory Energy Monitoring and Energy Audits

Understand and address your energy usage

In collaboration with our supplier partner, KoolZone, we able to offer our customers bespoke laboratory energy monitoring and energy audits.

What is an energy audit?

An energy audit of your laboratory or building will focus on the equipment and systems that impact energy consumption most heavily, such as HVAC, lighting, and scientific equipment. Energy audits provide comprehensive information on energy usage and efficiency.

Alternatively, energy monitoring or metering of specific equipment is also possible and delivers energy usage data for individual pieces of equipment in your lab.

Laboratory energy monitoring and energy audits

Why conduct energy monitoring and audits?

There are many reasons why a scientific organisation or laboratory might choose to undertake an energy audit. First and foremost, understanding your building or lab’s energy usage is key to formulating a meaningful plan to improve energy efficiency, energy conservation, and sustainability. The data provided through auditing and monitoring can help some customers work towards meeting their challenging carbon reduction targets.

Undertaking basic energy monitoring of individual pieces of lab equipment can highlight if any units are faulty or running inefficiently. Such units might benefit from a service, repair work, or even replacement. The monitoring process can also identify which pieces of equipment are working to expectation but are still consuming large amounts of energy. Here, laboratories can implement sustainable working practices to reduce energy usage, such as:

– Turning equipment off when not in use
– Only running equipment when fully loaded
– Using timers to control on/off cycles

The results obtained from both energy monitoring and audits can be used by scientists to build a business case for replacing inefficient equipment and applying for relevant grants. Furthermore, the information can help drive organisational improvements and the implementation of new working practices that reduce energy usage. Examples include:

  • ‘Close the sash’ initiatives for fume hoods and cabinets
  • Taking part in UCL’s LEAF initiatives
  • Participation in My Green Lab’s ‘Freezer challenge‘ competition
  • Joining equipment-share schemes
